Grand Finalist and Open (General Public) Category Winner – Bettina Damme
“I only have to step on my veranda to see these beautiful rainbow lorikeets. We in Australia are very lucky to have so much wildlife in our backyard, especially when you know that in the last 40 years 50% of our planet's wildlife has disappeared. If we are not careful then these beautiful birds will disappear as well.”
Macular Disease Community Winner – Jen Stocks
“I watch the seasons roll by on the farm, and I watch my children explore their backyard and grow. The years become collections of moments, and tiny visions of seemingly small and unimportant moments are the ones that stick with me most.”
Healthcare Professionals Category Winner – Dr Edwin Lim
“Startled by my approach a flock of ducks takes off from a dam in Camden on a frosty dawn, the zig-zagging shadows of Poplars guiding their flight paths.”
Junior (Under 18) Category Winner – Zara Jozsa
“Australia's beautiful backdrop is my backyard wherever I may be locally or on holiday. This light show lit up the Gold Coast summer sky. Living in a townhouse with only a courtyard, my family and I get out and about as much as we can - the simple and priceless things in life.”
People’s Choice Award – Linda McDowell
“Kookaburra, king of the bush sits in the old gum tree, laughing loudly with his roosting companions to protect their territory in my backyard. They are carnivores with extraordinary eyesight, peering keenly from side to side hunting for prey below with great acuity. Their laughter is an iconic Australian sound and it always makes me feel at home.”
The 2017 runners up:
Open Category Runner Up – Ron Lovatt
“In our garden the native Blue Banded Bees make interesting subjects but one needs a sharp eye and fast reflexes to capture them as they flit busily between the various flowers hovering for a split second as they choose the best pollen.”
Macular Disease Community Category Runner Up – Lyn Forbes
“Exploring my garden for tiny life is a joy. There is such a variety to capture and when I realise it is something new, I take many photos in the hope of taking the perfect shot. Photographing them has become a passion as it is often the little things that are overlooked. To find two lady beetles on one Agapanthus was a real delight.”
Healthcare Professionals Category Runner Up – Chris Barry
“On a dark and chilly morning last weekend, I had the privilege of walking along the Blackwood River. Mist was rising from the water obscuring a rising sun giving the world an ethereal feel. How would we be able to appreciate such a delightful scene if our vision was impaired by macular degeneration?”
Junior (Under 18) Category Runner Up – Jamie Burke
“I chose to photograph my pet lizard. I have a love for animals and think that they play an important part in our environment, both pets and wild animals. I chose to include this photo to support my love of all nature in my backyard.”
