MDFA showcases groundbreaking research projects in new impact report

Macular Disease Foundation Australia (MDFA) has launched its new Research Impact Report, which showcases the groundbreaking projects our organisation has funded to help reduce the impact of macular disease.

Enabled by the generous donations and bequests of our community, to date we have invested more than $5.9 million into unlocking new knowledge and innovations. This makes us Australia’s largest non-government source of funding for macular and retinal disease research.

“There is no denying the devastating impact macular disease can have on someone’s life and their family,” writes MDFA’s National Research Advisor, Professor Paul Mitchell AO, in the report’s foreword.

“Continued Australian investment into macular disease research is crucial to drive innovation, support clinical trials, and foster the development of novel therapies.

“As you read about the inspiring work into macular disease being undertaken by Australia’s leading research minds, all of whom have been generously funded by the community and supported by Macular Disease Foundation Australia, I hope you will join me in pledging your commitment to fight for sight in Australia,” he said.

Outcomes from MDFA research investment includes:

  • 29 funded researchers have had their work published in close to 100 articles in leading scientific journals internationally
  • 50% of lead researchers reported follow-on funding and grant success directly linked to MDFA-funded research.
  • 64% of lead researchers funded were women
  • 20% of researchers funded were rising stars with less than five years’ experience
  • 80% of lead researchers who received MDFA funding earned a promotion or were awarded a fellowship
