    Research Impact Report

    Visionary thinking. Revolutionary research.

Introducing our new MDFA Research Impact Report – an inspiring showcase of the groundbreaking projects we have invested in to help reduce the impact of macular disease. This investment is only made possible through the generous donations and bequests of our community.

We know that research carries the key to Australia’s fight for sight. It’s for this reason that we have invested more than $5.9 million into unlocking new knowledge and innovations, making us Australia’s largest non-government source of funding for macular and retinal disease research.

In our new report, you will see the high value outcomes of this investment. The researchers we have supported have contributed vital evidence to the macular and retinal disease knowledge base in Australia and internationally.

Continued Australian investment into macular disease research is crucial to drive innovation, support clinical trials, and foster the development of novel therapies.

    Professor Paul Mitchell AO

Creating opportunities for Australian researchers to discover new treatments, share their knowledge and improve macular and retinal disease care is essential in reducing the burden on people living with a macular disease, as well as their carers and families.

MDFA Research Grants Program impact snapshot:

    • 29 funded researchers have had their work published in close to 100 articles in leading scientific journals internationally
    • 50% of lead researchers reported follow-on funding and grant success directly linked to MDFA-funded research.
    • 64% of lead researchers funded were women
    • 20% of researchers funded were rising stars with less than five years’ experience
    • 80% of lead researchers who received MDFA funding earned a promotion or were awarded a fellowship

    Looking to the future

We estimate 2.1 million Australians will be impacted by macular disease by 2030. In response to this, we aim to double the number of research projects we fund by 2030.

This will cost more than $3 million – and we can achieve this with your support.

MDFA relies on the generosity of donors and bequests to invest in macular disease research. If you feel you would like to help us achieve this target and invest in Australia’s leading macular disease research grants program, contact our Philanthropy team on 1800 111 709 or email us at: [email protected].

    Together, let’s fight for sight.
